Perhaps the most revealing question is not whether Nolan’s Odysseus is faithful to Homer, but why our age requires him to possess a conscience Homer did not give him in quite this form. The ancient hero’s cunning secures victory; the modern hero must live long enough to understand what victory destroyed. That is where the connection with Oppenheimer becomes compelling: intelligence ceases to be heroic when it discovers that its greatest achievement has made the world less habitable. Nolan is not merely retelling an ancient story; he is placing modern responsibility inside it.

Yes and James Joyce’s Ulysses is a terrible book because it is set in Dublin not Athens ! Same with Kubricks 2001 a space odessey with Hal the computer speaking English not Greek hexameter 🤔😂

Great piece, speaking as a former journalist who writes novels and screenplays. I think its quite appropriate that Nolan takes and adapts Homer's epic poem, rooted in the dubious morality of its time, as an allegory to contemporary events and issues.

Hollywood never recovered from Cecil B DeMille…

More interesting reading your reviews than the opinion of the film that has had some very negative press… I loved reading the Odessey in high school and looked forward to seeing the movie and since I am not a critic—I view mainly for authenticity and entertainment value with no need to focus on flaws which definitely enhances my viewing experience however—that said—I notice editing, directing, what some call continuity or flow with a keen Ivand get frustrated with oversights so I’m now especially curious to see it…

i didn't watch Oppenhiemer because i know that everything about nuclear bombs is a lie. Not a single "scientist" in the Manhattan project regretted building the "bomb" that was fake, though they might have been stressed about the giant lie the told the world. Nagasaki and Hiroshima were fire bombed, burned to the ground, like 60 other japeneese cities. Yes, the great Jewisch contruct of the soviet socialist russia lied about their big tsara bomba. Maybe the clever horse story of odyseuss was just bombast, too. The moderrn world stands on bullshit, and its bullshit on top of bullshit going back thousands of years. only thing keeping this charade going is cheap hydrocarbon energy. Yes, brother, it is all fake and gay.

Says the guy who thinks man walked on the moon. Haha.

all the world is a stage 😎😂😆😡😛

Edward Teller was another brilliant scientist who definitely did not regret building the bomb and worked very hard to multiply the yield of these weapons via fusion not fission!

you are lost in the fog of the propaganda wars. nukes are fake, both fission and fusion. fake as the fucking moon landing and the COVID SCRAMDEMIC. to answer the question posed by the author - yes, it is propaganda.

Jerry as a Russian I do have a really great respect to you for being so knowledgeable about Russia and knowing such our prominent and important figures like Zhirinovsky and now Pozner whom most Westerners don't know. I have a feeling they don't know almost anyone except Putin and Medvedev, Navalny and Prigozhin, sigh.

Moreover most of their information about Russia is very ignorant and superficial and echoes either NATO or Kremlin propaganda. To read your objective and knowledgeable coverages on this background is like a breath air after sitting for too long in a stuffed room.

You're doing even better job of covering what's really going on in Russia and of things Russian than me because caught in cross-fire of Kremlin and NATO propagandists I just gave up...

But how had you acquired such an almost unique for a Westerner and profound and factual knowledge of Russia and all things Russian? Do you know Russian language or have Russian family members or have you lived in Russia? I'm genuinely curious.

And could we perhaps collaborate on Russia coverages at some point?

P. S. As for Odysseus review by Pozner itself, I disagree with his assessment but then it's a matter of opinion and I'm not a professional movie critic either.

Это моя Русская Душа! Alex, this is the best, most positive comments I ever received in 3 years on Substack! For that, I thank you very much! Please, allow me to share it… If you read my bio, this is why I started this newsletter-to present a view, perspective, and opinions, so often misinterpreted or completely unknown to “westerners" .

To answer your questions, I am not Russian by blood, but I am Russian by love (married to a Russian woman) father of my Russian son. I would say Russian through my higher education, graduated HSE, Moscow in 2022. And as you can conclude, I lived in Russia and speak Russian. There are so much other that politics that I would like to offer my readership, such as the works of Mikhalkov, Shakhnazarov, Tarkovski, Balabanov to site a few… Many associates Russian culture to Pushkin, Chekhov, or Tutchev, if they ever read it-or even understood it-but Russia is even more richer!

We definitely could collaborate, let me know what you have in mind, and thanks again for such a wonderful comment! Jerry B. Marchant

You're welcome, it was a factual compliment but also a veiled insult at many other Westerners who are pretty ignorant on Russia yet very opinionated on it...

Oh yes I read now you know Russian language and studied in HSE but I knew it should be something more - so you're married to a Russian lady...good, now I understand!

Oh, many of the ignorant Westerners don't know EVEN Pushkin and Chekhov! In fact they know no one but Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, sigh, and believe Russian literature to be 'gloomy' because of them...Why, Chekhov was pretty funny though. I like Bulgakov personally but he's not that well-known here as well.

Yeah I will text you with ideas for collaboration later, nice to know! Now Substack somehow doesn't let me access DM here if I'd not verify my age with my biometrics and I consider it an evil surveillance and refuse to do it. So now I have to figure how to bypass it - use VPN or something because now I can't access my DM still...

Спасибо большое за твои посты ещё раз, и приятно познакомиться!
